I was delighted to give a talk for the SCHIRN Kunsthalle Frankfurt impulse lecture series, as part of the programming surrounding their exhibition: Magnetic North. Imagining Canada in Painting 1910-1940. Here, I offer an alternative perspective on the commonly-adopted national and wilderness narratives surrounding the Canadian Group of Seven, and instead consider their coastal lake-scapes of the North Shore of Lake Superior in line with an emergent ecocritical perspective. This talk is derived from a forthcoming paper, Water in the Wilderness: The Group of Seven and Coastal Identity of Lake Superior to be published in the Journal of Canadian Studies in November 2021.
